Habits that create space

Defensive Driving

Defensive driving means expecting the unexpected and leaving yourself room to react to other drivers and changing conditions.

01

Following distance education

Pick a fixed object ahead. When the vehicle in front passes it, count the seconds until you reach it. Aim for at least three seconds in good conditions and more in poor weather.

02

Blind spot awareness

Mirrors do not show everything. Adjust side mirrors to reduce overlap with the rear view mirror and always check over your shoulder before moving laterally.

03

Safe lane changing

A steady routine keeps lane changes predictable.

  • Check mirrors and signal early
  • Look over your shoulder to check the blind spot
  • Move gradually while keeping your speed steady
  • Cancel the signal once you have settled into the lane

04

Defensive driving checklist

Keep scanning, keep space, keep speed matched to conditions, and keep your intentions clear with early signals.
