Hazards and conditions

Road Safety Guides

Road conditions change with weather, light, and season. These guides explain what to watch for and how to adjust.

01

Road hazard awareness

Scan well ahead for debris, potholes, stalled vehicles, and work zones. Early detection lets you slow down smoothly instead of swerving.

02

Poor weather driving safety

Wet and icy surfaces increase stopping distance. Reduce speed, turn on headlights, and avoid sudden braking or steering.

  • Increase following distance in rain, snow, and fog
  • Use low beams in fog so light does not reflect back
  • Avoid cruise control on wet or icy roads

03

Night driving awareness

Visibility drops sharply after dark. Keep windshield and headlights clean, dim dashboard lights, and look toward the right edge of the lane to reduce glare from oncoming traffic.

04

Intersection safety

Before entering an intersection, look left, right, and left again, even on a green light. Watch for turning vehicles, cyclists, and pedestrians.

05

Seasonal road conditions

Spring brings potholes, summer brings heavy travel and heat, autumn brings wet leaves and early darkness, and winter brings ice and reduced daylight. Adjust habits as seasons change.
